How ScuPlan Calculates Your Dive Plan

ScuPlan uses the Bühlmann ZHL-16C decompression model — the same algorithm used in most recreational dive computers — to calculate your no-decompression limits (NDL) and surface air consumption (SAC) rates. Every calculation runs entirely inside your browser. No data is sent to a server, and no account is required.

Surface Air Consumption (SAC) Rate

Your SAC rate is the litres of gas you breathe per minute at the surface. ScuPlan calculates it from your actual tank pressure drop, tank volume, average depth, and bottom time: SAC = (start_bar − end_bar) × tank_litres ÷ ((depth_m ÷ 10 + 1) × minutes). Once you have your SAC, the planner projects gas consumption for any planned depth and time with a configurable safety reserve (default 50 bar).

No-Decompression Limit (NDL)

The NDL is the maximum time you can spend at a given depth without needing a decompression stop on the way up. ScuPlan computes NDL using the Bühlmann tissue compartment model across all 16 half-time compartments and applies a default gradient factor of GF 40/85 for recreational diving. Technical divers can adjust gradient factors manually in the Technical Diving tab.

Equivalent Air Depth (EAD) and MOD

For Nitrox dives, ScuPlan calculates the Equivalent Air Depth so you can use standard air tables, and the Maximum Operating Depth (MOD) based on your chosen maximum partial pressure of oxygen (default 1.4 bar for bottom, 1.6 bar for deco). Enter your mix percentage and the planner updates both values instantly.

Limitations and Safety

ScuPlan is a planning aid, not a dive computer. Always carry a certified dive computer in the water, dive within your certification limits, and consult a qualified instructor or dive professional before attempting dives near your limits. Decompression models are statistical tools — individual physiology, hydration, temperature, and exertion level all affect actual decompression stress.
