Dive Computer Buying Guide 2026: Best Models for Every Budget
A dive computer is the most safety-critical piece of gear you'll buy. It tracks your depth, time, and nitrogen loading in real time — and alerts you before you make a fatal mistake. Choosing the right one matters.

Why Every Diver Needs Their Own Computer
Dive tables used to be the standard. You calculated your maximum dive time based on planned depth, used surface interval tables to track nitrogen off-gassing, and planned repetitive dives accordingly. This worked — but it was conservative, complex, and assumed your entire dive was at maximum depth.
A dive computer calculates in real time, updating every 1–5 seconds based on actual depth and time. This gives you:
- More accurate nitrogen loading: Time spent at 10m gets calculated differently from time at 30m
- More bottom time: Because you're not penalized for shallower portions of the dive
- Automatic safety monitoring: Ascent rate alarms, NDL alerts, decompression obligation tracking
- Repetitive dive planning: After the dive, the computer shows your surface interval requirements for the next dive
Key Features to Understand Before Buying
Algorithm Type
The decompression algorithm is the mathematical model the computer uses to calculate nitrogen absorption and off-gassing. The main algorithms in use:

For recreational diving, Bühlmann ZHL-16C (with gradient factors) or RGBM are both excellent. Most computers allow you to set a conservatism level (Conservative / Normal / Liberal) — always start on Conservative and only move toward Liberal after 50+ dives with no issues.
Air Integration
Air-integrated computers connect wirelessly to a transmitter on your first stage, displaying your tank pressure on the computer face. They also calculate RBT (Remaining Bottom Time) — how long you can stay at current depth before needing to surface based on air supply. This is extremely useful but adds cost ($100–200 for transmitter + compatible computer).
Wrist vs. Console
Pros: Always visible, no hose needed, lighter, easier to read in any position, wearable as a watch
Cons: Smaller display, may need separate pressure gauge if not air-integrated
Best for: Most divers — beginner through advanced
Pros: Larger display, built-in pressure gauge on same unit, easier to read in poor visibility
Cons: Requires hose, hose adds clutter, not wearable at surface
Best for: Divers who prefer analog compass + integrated gauge, older divers preferring larger displays
Color vs. Monochrome Display
Color displays are easier to read quickly (red/yellow/green status indicators are instantly readable). However, color screens drain batteries faster. Monochrome screens last 2–5x longer per charge. In poor visibility or night diving, backlit monochrome can be just as usable.
Dive Modes
- Air/Nitrox: Standard on virtually all modern computers
- Gauge mode: Depth/time only, no decompression calculations (for freediving, if using deco tables)

The technical diver's choice. Handles multi-gas switching, rebreather support, and custom gradient factors with a clean interface that doesn't overwhelm. Air integration with the Swift transmitter is the cleanest implementation available.

What to Avoid When Buying a Dive Computer
- No-name brands from unknown manufacturers: Dive computers are life-safety devices. Avoid unreviewed brands from mass retail marketplaces. Stick to Shearwater, Garmin, Suunto, Mares, Cressi, Oceanic, Scubapro, or Aqualung.
- Outdated models without Nitrox: Most diving sites today offer EAN32 or EAN36. A computer without Nitrox capability limits your options.
- Non-rechargeable sealed batteries: If you dive regularly, replacing CR2032 batteries is annoying. Most modern computers are rechargeable — worth the slight premium.
- Overly complex interfaces: A computer you can't operate with cold, gloved hands is dangerous. Test the button layout before buying — or read user reviews specifically about underwater usability.
- Buying based on smartwatch features alone: The decompression algorithm matters more than the step counter. Don't buy a dive computer because it's also a nice watch.
Dive Computer Care and Maintenance
- Rinse with fresh water after every dive, including the buttons and sensor port
- Never use high-pressure hose to rinse (damages O-rings and displays)
- Store in a protective case or bag — displays crack if sat on or dropped
- Replace battery or charge before every dive trip — don't assume it's charged from last time
- Service the depth sensor every 2–3 years (silicone contamination from sunscreen can clog the port)
- If using a transmitter: check O-rings on transmitter fitting annually
